French, circа 1890 | Louis XVI Neoclassical Revival
Attributed to the Workshops of Maison Krieger or Maison Jansen, Paris
This exquisite pair of fauteuils à la reine represents the pinnacle of the late 19th-century French obsession with the elegance of the Ancien Régime. Crafted during the Belle Époque, these chairs are a masterclass in Neoclassical restraint and architectural precision.
The hand-carved beechwood frames feature a sophisticated two-tone grisaille finish in shades of antique blue-grey and bone white. Notable for their diamond-lozenge die-joints and hand-chiselled anthemion (honeysuckle) carvings, the frames transition seamlessly into fluted, tapered legs ending in delicate thimble feet.
Of particular importance is the original hand-stitched Aubusson-style needlepoint upholstery. Each chair showcases a central floral médaillon encased in a laurel wreath, suspended by \"true lover’s knots\" and flowing ribbon-work—motifs popularized by Marie Antoinette at the Petit Trianon. The soft, sun-faded palette of sage, dusty rose, and cerulean wool remains in remarkable original condition, offering a rare \"lived-in\" patina that epitomizes the curated Parisian aesthetic.
