This striking pair of low adjustable reclining outdoor lounge chairs with matching ottomans, designed by Mario Papperzini for John Salterini in the 1950s, combines sculptural presence with great decorative flair. The wrought iron frames, later painted in a chic soft sage green, feature lattice strap backs and seats, while rounded aluminum ball finials accent the back corners, arm ends, and ottoman posts. Each piece stands on straight iron legs joined by star-shaped stretchers with collared joints, giving a crisp, architectural profile. Cushions are not included.
Mario Papperzini (1910–1978), an Italian designer, developed a modern yet classical vocabulary for outdoor furniture, favoring open latticework that ventilated in warm climates while recalling historic grille patterns. John Salterini (1905–1992), who emigrated from Italy to New York, established his namesake firm in the 1930s and became renowned for wrought iron garden furniture that blended Italian elegance with American durability. Together, their designs defined mid-century outdoor living, with adjustable backs and modular ottomans reflecting the postwar emphasis on leisure and adaptability.
These loungers make a sophisticated statement on a sun porch, terrace, or poolside deck. Their sculptural lines stand out against stone, brick, or stucco, while tailored canvas or striped cushions can soften the lattice and introduce color.
